FOCUS GROUP

This is my focus group video. This was useful to me because it helped me to see what people recognised to be the common conventions in my magazine genre and what I should use in my final product. They evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of each convention and made it clear why each was used.

READER PROFILE PERSONAL

key conventions of music magazine COVER CONTENTS AND DOUBLE SPREAD

MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ANALYSIS

This is a double page spread feature article taken from Kerrang magazine. I think that the structure and framework is well balanced of text and imagery, as well as a large, bold titled font to show who the band is. The colour scheme is continous and looks aesthetically pleasing to the reader. The large image of the band in focus covers half of the double page spread to emphasize that they are the main feature of the article. The small box in the bottom right hand corner shows that the magazine is targeted at a younger audience because it is quite informal and the fonts are bold and in your face rather than being minimalistic like magazines of a similar genre who target an older market, for example a good magazine comparison would be Q magazine who always have the same minimalistic genre so the audience know what to expect.

MAGAZINE CONTENTS PAGE ANALYSIS

This magazine contents page is from Q magazine, another magazine that supports my target music genre. I prefer this contents page lay out and intend to use it as inspiration for my final product. I think that the enlarged numbers on each image stand out clearly and as this is the main point to a contents page it is effective in directing the audience to different articles. The colour scheme is very similar to NME's and I would not want my magazine to be too identical to the examples I have evaluated, so I know that I will contradict common genre conventions and use a different colour scheme.

MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS HOMEWORK

This is another NME magazine cover, I prefer this layout as it supports the more common conventions of the magazines framework. The Tyler The Creator cover was more of a special edition one off issue, with the golden outline and the missing subtitles on the left or right hand sides. This cover with Alex Turner and Miles Kane is more ideal for my magazines layout as it does not contradict the genres common conventions, and people will easily be able to recognise my magazines genre. The main cover line shows who the main article will feature, and this will lead most people to purchase the item depending on whether or not it is a singer that they like. As they are dressed in black, this may symbolize that they are quite dark and rebellious, which matches the quotations as it shows that Turner has taken a venture with a new artist instead of his original band set up. This is further emphasized by them being positioned back to back to show that they are not completely comfortable with each other. The large, bold fonted, red subtitles match the conventional colour scheme that NME is well known for of red and black. This makes the main features and articles of the magazine stand out and encourage the target audience to purchase the item based on bands from the genre being highlighted and made to stand out.
